Simply Recipes Supports Black Lives Matter
Hello, Simply Recipes community,
Our team has spent this past week thinking through our response to the recent events, talking with our staff and contributors, and reflecting on our own actions here on Simply Recipes — past, present, and future. We wanted to be sure we were truly responding and not just reacting.
I’m not sure if you all know, but our team is actually remote, working from all across the country. Some of us have kids, some don’t. We don’t all share the same political beliefs or cultural persuasions. But we all deeply believe black lives matter, and we stand in solidarity with those protesting the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade and countless others.
But of course, saying we believe that black lives matter is one thing. Acting and showing up is where the real work comes in. Here are our commitments:
- We are proud of the diverse group of writers we have brought to Simply Recipes over the past several years. However, this week we realized that we could be doing more to highlight our writing team, and to make them more visible on the site. We commit to doing better in coming months, starting with featured interviews and Instagram introductions.
- In looking at our full-time and part-time team, the lack of people of color is evident. We have been very aware of this, and we commit to actively seek more diversity in the future. An immediate action item is to begin developing an internship program geared toward people of color who are interested in learning about food media, advertising, and communications.
- As a team, we are making a donation to Campaign Zero, an organization dedicated to ending police violence.
As always, we’d love to hear from you as we move forward with the recipes and stories that have become a part of your family over the years. In listening to you, we can continue to learn, engage, and connect — after all, isn’t that what gathering around the table is all about?
Thank you for being a valued member of our community. We wouldn’t be here without you.
~ Emma Christensen, Editor in Chief
